The remains was brought back to the
motherland via a chartered flight from Dubai, which landed at Nnamdi
Azikiwe Airport, FCT Abuja, on June 11, 2014, Wednesday. Dora’s husband
and two sons have been accompanying the body all the way from Mumbai.
The ex Minister of Information and
former National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control
Director General was flown to India in May 2014 after her condition
worsened.
The immediate past Governor of Anambra
State, Peter Obi, the Minister of State for Environment, Dora’s family
members and friends were at the airport to receive the corpse.
Her remains was later deposited at the
mortuary of the National Hospital, Abuja. This has been confirmed by the
spokesperson of the hospital, Dr. Tayo Haastrup, who also revealed that
the body arrived between 7.30 and 8pm.
After depositing the body, the family
members have relocated to the Akunyilis’ Abuja residence in order to
start a meeting for the preparation of the burial ceremonies.
It would be recalled that Prof Dora
Akunyili passed away at the age of 59 on June 7, 2014. The family
sources later revealed that she has lost her battle against uterine
cancer. Dora’s chances to overcome the decease could have been bigger,
however, an alleged misdiagnosis allowed cancer to win in about one
year.
